Understanding BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index based on height and weight for adults. It is one of many tools that can be used as a general reference for health and is not a diagnostic measure.

Learn more about BMI

What is BMI?

BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The result is rounded to one decimal place; changing either input recalculates it immediately.

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2

Adult BMI categories

Underweight< 18.5
Normal weight18.5 – 24.9
Overweight25.0 – 29.9
Obesity≥ 30.0

Limitations

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and does not account for bone density, body composition, age, sex, pregnancy, or individual health circumstances. Use it as an adult screening reference, not a diagnosis.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Which units can I enter?

Choose Metric to enter centimetres and kilograms, or US / Imperial to enter feet, inches, and pounds. The calculator converts the values automatically, so the result remains comparable whichever system you use.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For example, 65 kg divided by 1.70 m² gives 22.5 after rounding to one decimal place. The page updates this calculation whenever you change an input.

What does my BMI category mean?

The scale compares an adult BMI with commonly used reference bands: under 18.5, 18.5–24.9, 25.0–29.9, and 30.0 or above. It is a reference label, not a diagnosis or a complete assessment of health.

Why can BMI be misleading for some people?

BMI uses only height and weight. It cannot tell muscle from body fat and does not account for age, pregnancy, bone density, body composition, or individual medical circumstances. Discuss a result that concerns you with a qualified health professional.

Can children, teenagers, or pregnant people use this result?

This calculator uses adult reference bands. Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific growth assessment, and pregnancy requires individual clinical context; the displayed category should not be used as their health assessment.

Are my measurements saved or sent by this calculator?

The calculation runs in your browser from the values you enter. The tool itself does not provide an account or a measurement-history feature. Standard website and advertising services may still process data according to their own policies.

What does the body silhouette show?

The silhouette is an illustrative proportion view that changes with the entered height and calculated BMI. It is not a body scan and does not measure body fat, muscle, shape, or health.
